American Hero Series:
Jeff Spicoli
"S is for Spicoli" is my inaugural piece celebrating some of the American Heroes often overlooked by the world of academia.
I begin the series with a portrait of Jeff Spicoli, the character from Fast Times at Ridgemont High played by Sean Penn. Jeff Spicoli played to his own rules, lived his life on his own terms, and serves as a reminder that all you need are "tasty waves" and a "cool buzz." This formula, though unconventional by many standards, was enough for Spicoli to be the happiest character in the film...content, joyous, and ready to party. He was a hero to me.
For the portrait, I worked with an image of Superman from the 1950's television program played by the great George Reeves. The stoic portrait with arms at his side and cape matched well with the smiling image of Jeff Spicoli's lovable grin. The giant "S" on the chest, to me, stands for Spicoli. The were done with silkscreen and aerosol and acrylic paint.
There five different versions of the "S is for Spicoili" pieces. Each measures 24"x 20" on archival paper. Each is signed by artist Cory Danziger. All ship with Certificates of Authenticity.
