Kermit is a Buddha

Cory Danziger, 2024

20"x 24" on Archival Paper

To me, Buddhas are around us in everyday life, whether they are neighbors or leaders or fictional characters.  They possess knowledge, wisdom, and enlightenment.  They are teachers and are figures worthy of admiration, respect, and have much we can learn from.  As a child, Kermit served as a Buddha to me.  I loved him and thought he was so wise.  With the Kermit is a Buddha piece, I focused on my own vision of him when I was a child.  I think he was worthy of a statue showcasing the love he brought to me and many others.  He was a light and a teacher.

For many in Western culture particularly, that which we worship goes beyond religion and falls into the world of pop culture.  That’s the theme behind the Kermit works.  I took the traditional image of the Buddha, and rethought the identity of something that I worshiped as a child, Kermit the Frog.  The piece carries the theme of joy that the traditional Buddha appears to have to me.  I worked with the backgrounds and added the "rainbow" which Kermit clearly loved too.  In these works the rainbow forms from within Kermit and travels outward to the world.
